Actress aide held

Mumbai, Aug. 26 (PTI): Mumbai police today arrested Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra’s former secretary, Prakash Jaju, in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly sending threatening and obscene text messages to her.

Jaju had allegedly started harassing Chopra after she accused him of swindling money from her account and fired him. He had been on the run for two years.

Nandi protest

Tamluk (PTI): A headmaster, his teachers and students with 5,000 other villagers demonstrated outside a Nandigram school on Tuesday demanding that an Eastern Frontier Rifles camp on its premises be dismantled. They accused the jawans of teasing schoolgirls and thrashing a non-teaching employee.

Custody

Calcutta: A man was allegedly beaten to death in police custody in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday. Sanjit Haldar, 40, who was picked up by police along with Hannan Baidya, 35, from Lakshmikantapur station on Monday for fighting in an inebriated condition, died on his way to a Diamond Harbour hospital. “We believe that he was beaten to death by the police,” said Sanjit’s nephew, Kamal Haldar, who has lodged a complaint with the police.

Minor raped

Vadodara (PTI): A 17-year-old girl was gangraped after being tied to a tree in Narmada district. The victim’s father said in his complaint that the girl was abducted by five youths, including an autorickshaw driver, on August 21 and was raped in a jungle.

Lawyer shot

Gorakhpur (PTI): The legal adviser of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University has been shot dead by two unidentified persons, police have said. Vidya Sagar Pandey, 65, was taking an evening stroll near the campus when he was shot in the head.

Peddler trial

Moga (PTI): A court has sentenced a woman drug peddler to 12 years’ rigorous imprisonment in connection with a seizure of 1.25 quintal of poppy husk three years ago. Two others have been acquitted.
