Saris worth lakhs recovered, 2 held

Two people were arrested in the port area on Tuesday in connection with the theft of saris worth Rs 32 lakh. Seventy-three of the 83 stolen packets were recovered from Asif Nomani and Mohammad Sadre Alam. Police said the consignment was loaded on a Matador on August 14 in Bowbazar. The transport operator had asked driver Mohammad Rahamat, a resident of Kidderpore, to take the packets to the Dhulagarh truck terminus in Howrah. “The goods never reached the destination. The vehicle was found the next day in Bankra, Howrah,” the police said. Rahamat’s aides, Nomani and Alam, have been arrested. A search is on for Rahamat.

Auto trouble continues

The ordeal for the residents on the southern fringes of the city continued on Tuesday with around 1,500 autorickshaws going off the road for the second consecutive day. The autorickshaw owners are protesting raids by police and the transport authorities. Some auto drivers who have valid documents brought out their vehicles during the day, but were allegedly attacked by those whose vehicles had been seized.

Cash seized

The Customs authorities at Calcutta airport seized $10,000 and Rs 37,000 from a Bangkok-bound passenger on Tuesday morning. Meghalaya resident Gopichand Sangma was stopped by the Customs authorities while he was about to board a Thai Airways flight. The money was seized after he failed to produce proper documents. Sangma was allowed to board the flight after the money was confiscated.

Two suicides

A 16-year-old girl, Rakhi Mondol, was found hanging from a tree in a garden in Bally’s Dilsaripara on Tuesday morning. Rakhi, who worked as a domestic help, did not return home on Monday. An unnatural death case has been registered. nother woman in Bally, Pushpa Toppu, 38, committed suicide by hanging herself in her house on Tuesday morning. Family members said Pushpa was mentally challenged and had been depressed for the past couple of days.

Road mishap

Nimai Das, a resident of Mahestala Lane, was injured when the private bus he was travelling in collided with a taxi near Dalhousie Club, on Mayo Road, on Tuesday afternoon. Both vehicles were travelling in the same direction. Das was admitted to CMRI Hospital.

Protesters held

Twenty-two supporters, including a woman, of Burrabazar District Youth Trinamul Congress, were arrested near Writers’ Buildings on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the Trinamul supporters had gathered around 2.50pm and were shouting slogans on the Singur issue.
