Ancient wisdom

There’s been a lot of talk about the raging energy crisis and inflation of late. As people grapple with the problem, one Peter Breuer from Essex, United Kingdom, has found an innovative way of reducing expenditure. Breuer has reduced his gas bill from £20 to £5 per month after he started using a stove whose design dates back to the 14th century. This Hungarian stove has been so efficient in keeping the house warm that Breuer has done away with his central heating system. The stove uses a bundle of logs every day to heat the whole house. These tile stoves can store heat for a long time and radiate it through the tiles in the course of the day. The stoves have been popular in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Scandinavia since the medieval times. Old, as they say, is gold.

Road to safety

The city played host to a school-contact programme initiated by Hyundai Motor India Limited recently. About 120 students from 30 schools across Calcutta participated in the contest. The painting contest called ‘Sketch the i’ aimed at increasing awareness among children on road safety issues. Gourab Ghosh from St Paul Mission School won the Calcutta leg of the competition. The nation-wide winner will get an opportunity to visit the Hyundai auto plant in Korea.
