Pregnancy grouse

Muzaffarnagar, May 24 (PTI): A woman who found herself pregnant despite undergoing sterilisation has complained to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayavati seeking action against the doctors.

Rakesh, a mother of seven, underwent sterilisation on February 25, 2008, at a government hospital but has now found out she is pregnant.

Detonators

Rameswaram (PTI): Police have seized an abandoned gunny bag stuffed with 1,152 detonators in Tamil Nadu. The bag was spotted by a passer-by who alerted the police. Investigations are on to find out who dumped the explosives.

Katara case

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court on Saturday watched a CD allegedly showing key witness in the Nitish Katara murder case, Ajay Katara, admitting to taking a bribe for testifying in the case. The court reserved its order on an application filed by prime accused Vikas Yadav, seeking re-examination of Ajaya’s statement. Ajay, too, has filed an application claiming he was made to testify falsely under the influence of alcohol. The accused allegedly killed Nitish after kidnapping him from a wedding because of his involvement with Vikas’s sister.

Hooch axe

Bangalore (PTI): The Karnataka government has transferred the state excise commissioner, C.R. Chikkamath, after illicit liquor killed 133 people in the state. Senior IAS officer Yogendra Tripathi has been appointed the new commissioner.

Robber dad

Guntur (PTI): Andhra Pradesh police on Saturday arrested a 45-year -old man, wanted for 12 break-ins . Gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh were recovered from P. Subbarao, who told the media he had committed the thefts to raise money for his 18-year-old daughter’s wedding.

Apology

Toronto (PTI): British Columbia lawmakers marked the 94th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident by voting to apologise for the then Canada government’s refusal to allow the Indian passengers of a ship to land in Vancouver.
